Sister Veronica Openibo sent a wake up call to the Catholic Church during the Vatican’s 4-day summit on fighting child abuse. The nun from Nigeria condemned the culture of silence, denial and cover-up that allowed sexual abuse of minors to persist in the Church for decades with very few repercussions for offenders.
Sr. Veronica, the only African speaker at the summit, and one of a very few women present, addressed a room full of senior clergy in the Catholic Church, including the Pope whom she warmly called “Brother Francis”.
We celebrate bold women who are speaking up and demanding for accountability and justice for victims.
